Background from a partisan Democratic perspective: http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0618-03.htm If you disagree with the article's historical or theoretical claims, go ahead and speak up.

I think we all know that the current system is utterly wrecked. And we probably also agree that the current plan of action is a bad idea. But what are the alternative solutions? Can we use passive laws (like anti-trust) instead of active ones (like welfare) to maintain the economy?

What alternatives do we have to welfare? Empty Middle Class

Post  Mick Sun Nov 22, 2009 9:10 pm

The Middle Class has never had it better in this country . The fact of the matter the abundance of opportunity and expansion of business under the Reagan policies , and the burst under the Clinton/Republican Congress has prospered a middle class that has never had it better . If you looked at the percentage of incomes for example it took to buy a car in actually middle class working hours to purchase before the "evil' corporations were able to mass produce them you will see just one benefit . What it takes now in working hours to purchase is incredibly lower to buy a car , people have two or more of them in many cases. A cell phone cost a a couple thousand dollars at one time to own" Our kids get them for their 16th birthdays now " , eating out was a luxury, some people eat out almost as much as they eat at home . If the middle class was in such trouble , why are so many people eating out ?

The number of middle class people owning boats , going on Vacations to Casinos to throw away money , ther amount of spare time the middle class has compared to a generation ago, all the luxuries average people have now compared to a short time ago is unbelievable. Our middle class would be considered rich rich and I guess EVIL because of it buy the liberal aspect of this country a generation ago .

I suggest fear is the major problem of the middle class from the use of the political use of class envy, and being told how bad off they are. The large percentage of Americans never had it so good , including minorities and even our poor. But the belief from the media is they are in trouble . So they tend to believe yeah there is a war on the middle class , I am lucky I must escaped but everyone elese is sinking fast. , Actually they are the norm, most middle class people enjoy good lives compared to a generation or more ago. Minorities upward spiral was greatly advanced during the Reagan years and follwoing years . From the criticism you would think it was the opposite . Corporations should be thanked , they have made goods we use cheaper to buy and easier to obtain that at one time we have thought only the jet set could use . Look at the people boarding an Airplane to go to Disney Land , every type of person is on our airplanes today . At one time only the elete would fly .

Hog wash , things are getting better in the United States because of free markets and the chance for people to work at their own disgression to obtain success. Spend more hours working , the odds are you will be fiancially better for it.

More kids go to college then ever before , more people own homes, our homes are almost twice the size our parents were . One thing drastically has changed , that is the need for education to succeed because of our reduced manufacturing . Too bad the governemnt does not allow freedom of choice there , education would be better and cheaper . But I don't expect a 24 year old to have any kind of earning capabilty then a person in there 30,s or 40's do . So again they hear the fear and class envy and believe this hopeless scenerio and want government to give it to them . Which will result in a declining way of life . Reagan had it right . So did Clinton when he got a Congress that helped him .

Ooh, I need to get a liberal to offer objections to that... BTW, see here for a relevant policy that I'd like feedback on.
